How To Become Unstuck
Do you feel as though you want to move forward and are unsure of how to begin?
Do you find yourself repeating the same patterns of behavior over and over again?
Do you sometimes feel upset or frustrated and cannot pinpoint what is upsetting you?
It can be difficult to move forward when you are unsure of what needs to change or where your obstacles are limiting you.
Before you can clarify what you want and the actions that will lead to your inspired goals, we need to discover what is driving your behavior and understand who you are as a person and what is important to you. In the coaching world this is where beliefs and values come in.
Beliefs drive action without conscious thought.
Think about this statement for a minute – this shows just how powerful our beliefs are.
Beliefs can be positive (driving great action) or negative (limiting beliefs that stop action). Limiting beliefs can be an obstacle and a driver for repetition of patterns of negative behaviors.
I think this quote sums it up:
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Henry Ford
This is the thing, you need to do things differently if you want to create positive change and begin your journey of transformation.
To change your actions, you need first to understand what your beliefs are that are driving your behaviour.
A belief is an acceptance of something that is true without needing proof. For example, “There are more sunshine hours in the summer”.
One of my top beliefs is:
‘Within every challenge there is an opportunity for personal growth’
Where has this been born? It’s from growing stronger and developing through my own difficult and challenging experiences. Therefore I have come to believe that in every challenge there is space to learn and grow.
Think about the significant events in your life, what beliefs have been formed as a consequence?
Try listing your top 5 beliefs.
Values are what define who you are, how you relate to other people and the world in general.
Values are how we decide about how we feel about our actions; whether they are good/bad or right/wrong.
For example my top 5 values are:
There is no right or wrong, just who YOU are!
What are your top 5 values?
Try thinking about what is most important to you in life.
Then ask yourself ‘What does ‘family’ mean to me?
‘Family means love, security and loyalty’
Therefore the core values are love, security and loyalty.
You can also Google ‘list of values’
Look over the list and circle the ones that you are drawn to most (no intellect allowed, this is pure intuition and gut reaction).
Any goals we make together need to align with your list of core values and beliefs.
Don’t panic if your beliefs and values do not align, this is very common and provides a starting point to the work we need to focus on.
Through our work together we would also identify any limiting beliefs that are holding you back.
This simple exercise is great for understanding what is hindering you from living the life you want and clarifying the goals to take action towards the life you do want!
